President's Column
By President Joyce Mak

Rotary Leaders, Be Prepared

I like the month of December a lot! It's a month to share your love and happiness with your families and friends in this Festive Season! A month to review your 'great' or 'not so great' moments - we need to learn how to give thanks no matter in good or bad times.

Time flies, I am already half way through my presidency. Looking back, my performance as the first lady President of our Club, I believe there are lots of areas that can be improved on and I could have worked a lot harder. Regardless of whether I have conducted our regular luncheon meetings well, or whether I have performed well in public speeches, time will pass and I can only concentrate on my remaining tasks.

Our first AGM will be held on this Thursday, 4 December. It is an important event to confirm next year's leaders for each prospective position. Apart from confirming Michael Eyles as our President-Elect for this Rotary year, it was also suggested that all other board members for the next Rotary year to be elected as early as possible. It is definitely wise to get the team together at least half a year in advance, as it really takes time for the President-Elect and VP to be mentally and physically ready for their roles. The Rotary Leadership Institute has given the members an excellent platform to be trained up as future leaders to serve in Rotary. This year, I'm delighted to have nominated our PE Michael and VP Stephen to attend the session!

I believe it is not an easy task for each President to look for a new group of Rotary leaders for a new Rotary year. Members have always considered the timing is not right to play the role as Club President because they are not ready. When will it be appropriate then? Facing uncertainties in our ever changing world, I believe that there is no such thing as "Appropriate Timing" and we can only do our best to serve our Club, our Community and our World.

Below are my observations and experience on how to equip oneself as being a Rotary Leader:

1. Plan for your year as early as possible so that we can identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of our Club in the process.

2. Solicit support from members because their participation will contribute to the success of our Club.

3. Learn more about Rotary such as the Rotary Foundation, Youth Exchange, and the objectives of Rotaract Club & Interact Club etc through the RI and district website.

4. Follow the "Service Above Self" motto and commit yourself to serve because your enthusiasm will influence other members to follow.

5. Obtain support from your family by involving your spouse and children in Rotary activities because without their support, you will never be able to succeed and serve.

Dear friends, it's time to start planning for the future of our Club, our Community. To Make Dreams Real!
