President's Column
By President Joyce Mak

Welcome to the Year of the Ox

Kung Hei Fat Choi! Wish all Kingsparicans good health and may your dreams come true!

Our Career Expo was successfully held at HoTung Secondary School on 20 January 2009. We have held this seminar for the consecutive 8 years and have been well received by many schools and students. Over the years we invited more than 300 professionals and benefited over 2000 students from various secondary schools. This year we presented our career expo for the students of The Church of Christ in China Heep Woh College and HoTung Secondary School. Our theme this year is¡u¸Ë³Æ¦ÛÆv¡A³Ð¥X¬¸¦n«eÆ{¡v. It was our great honour to have invited our keynote speaker, Centaline Property Chairman, Mr. Shih Wing Ching. He gave all the students a very inspiring speech how he has worked himself up the ladder after graduation. All in all, he wanted the students to remember that hardship is nevertheless one of the key success factors in building one's career, but having the creativity to differentiate oneself is equally important.

A total of 17 professionals from different vocations and over 400 students attended the seminar. The success of the vocational talk was definitely a collective effort, not only the two principals of the schools who played a very active role to promote and organize the seminar but certainly the teachers and our Kingspark committee board have also done a tremendous job. I would like to express my gratefulness to our Career Expo Chairman, Kennedy Tsang, Project Director PP Dominic Ko and Project Advisor AG Peter Lo. Moreover, without the presence of all the speakers and Rotarians' participation, the seminar would not have been so successful.

We had our Chinese New Year Gathering on 31 January 2009. We had an attendance of 10 Rotarians, their families and 8 Rotaractors. Apart from food and wine, we had a great time playing a number of games including the beer drinking (PE Michael vs. Scholar Akanksha), flower seeds cracking (Rosa vs. Raymond Lam) and Mah Jong tiles guessing (Joey vs. Amy). Congratulations to the winners who got red pockets as prizes. We ended the evening with great fellowship and laughter.

Coming to the month of February, the World Understanding Month in the Rotary calendar. It is essential for us to find out the culture of our neighboring countries and know about their underlying needs prior to making contributions. By accommodating the needs of the other parts of our World, we are able to extend our concern and assistance through Rotary International. We play an important part as a team by giving out donations and applying for various types of Grants while our international teammates will deliver the necessities to serve the people in need. We could not underestimate the power of teamwork as we create great synergy with collective efforts and gain international friendship. Teamwork at Club level is absolutely critical to achieve great results. This could be demonstrated by our Adopt-A-School program. For the past few years, with our group effort, we successfully organized various vocational seminars and events which are well-received by students at HoTung Secondary School. Let's continue to achieve more by contributing our time and effort to serve our Community and the World through our club members' synergy.
